Gardens to host volunteer guide conference

01/11/2009

More than 100 volunteer guides from botanical gardens around the country and New Zealand will descend on Tasmania this month for a regional conference.

Tasmania's abundance of natural, cultural and heritage sites made it a easy choice for a conference venue and delegates to the Australasian Conference of Voluntary Guides in Botanic Gardens will be experiencing the State's great sites during and after the four-day event.

Volunteers from the Friends of the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens have prepared an exciting schedule for visiting guides, including workshops with RTBG staff and guided tours of Port Arthur, Mt Field National Park and other leading Tasmanian attractions.

A speaker's program of inspiring and informative talks and presentations will provide the opportunity to examine and learn about Tasmanian native plants, seed collection and bonsai.

The final half-day program gives delegates a chance to tour a number of private gardens.

Sixteen Gardens will be represented at the conference: Adelaide Royal Botanical Gardens, Australian Arid Lands Botanic Gardens Port Augusta, Australian National Botanic Gardens ACT, Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot -Tha, Brisbane City Botanic Gardens, Christchurch Botanic Gardens NZ, Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens, Geelong Botanic Gardens, Kings Park Perth, Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens, Melbourne RBG and Cranbourne RBG, Mount Tomah Botanic Gardens NSW, Sydney RBG, RTBG Hobart, Wellington Botanic Gardens NZ.

The biennial conference is being held from 9 to 13 November.

Conference organisers thank the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Friends of the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Tasmania 40 degrees South, Moorilla and Moo Brew.
