Day out for teddies

29/10/2009

Tasmanian teddies had a day out at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens this week, bringing their owners along for the ride.

A crowd of 1,500 visitors (not counting bears) explored the Gardens, patted baby animals and played games.

The 2009 Teddy Bears Picnic was organised by Play Group Tasmania to coincide with the brilliant spring display at the Gardens.

This annual event has been running for more than 20 years and is held statewide.

RTBG director Lesley Kirby said the rain threatened early but held off as the crowd rolled in.

"This event is another example of a great family day out in the Gardens and we are pleased to be able to help with such a great community event," Lesley said.

The picnic featured a petting zoo, games and activities, a jumping castle and heaps of entertainment.

Tasmania Police and St John's Ambulance were both on hand but the bears were on their best behaviour and there were no incidents.

The picnic was free event held as part of Children's Week celebrations.
