Master classes in the Gardens

Want to create your own gardening masterpiece but don't think you have sufficiently green fingers?
The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens can help with its new series of gardening master classes.
The four- hour sessions start this week with the lowdown on pruning and propagating roses.
The expert tutors are all highly-trained horticulturalists from the Gardens who will guide you through the essentials of establishing and maintaining a glorious garden.
The sessions will be held monthly and cover a variety of topics including composting, rotational planting, weaving fibres, garden design and planting natives.
This is a unique opportunity to work alongside and get some tips from Gardens staff.
All classes run from 9am to 1.30pm and include a Devonshire tea. Bookings are essential and classes are limited to 15 participants. To book, please call 6236 3057. Cost: $40 per session.
Class schedule
July 17: Rose pruning and hardwood propagation.
August 14: The Organic Garden - soils, compost, rotational planting, fruit trees, small fruit.
September 18: Weaving with New Zealand flax. Learn techniques including plaiting and buttonhole coiling.
October 9 and 16: Designing your garden - A two- part, basic design course including styles, plant choices and practical steps ($40 per session).
November 20: Introduction to Tasmanian flora - Propagation, uses and benefits of using Tasmanian plants in your garden.
