Maintenance of Conservation Plant Collections
The RTBG holds conservation collections of over a dozen threatened species.
Major collections of plants listed as endangered under Tasmanian legislation are bearded heath (Epacris barbata), Freycinet wax flower (Philotheca freyciana), shy Susan (Tetratheca gunnii) and Davies wax flower (Phebalium davesii).
The collection of King's Lomatia (Lomatia tasmanica) has been in decline for a number of years and research on vegetative propagation including tissue culture is being undertaken with funding from the Tasmanian Regional Rare and Threatened Species Restoration Database project. King's Lomatia is a clone that is unable to reproduce by seed so tissue culture could be an effective means for increasing numbers for ex-situ conservation.
Tasmanian Regional Rare and Threatened Species Restoration Database
The RTBG receives funding for the Tasmanian Regional Rare and Threatened Species Restoration Database, from BHP Billiton's Tasmanian Electro Metallurgical Co Pty Ltd (TEMCO) plant at Bell Bay and the Tasmanian Minerals Council.
