Meeting Tasmania Together Priority Benchmarks
The Tasmania Together program has determined a number of priority benchmarks for 2002-2005.
While many of the benchmarks addressed in the RTBG Strategic Plan are longer term, the plan does address the following priority benchmarks either directly or in an enabling role:
Poverty
To achieve excellence in horticultural and botanical education, research, training and extension programsThe RTBG provides a range of training and work experience programs for disadvantaged people in areas relevant to their interests, using settings and delivery methods appropriate to participants' receptiveness and taking into account their employment readiness and other opportunities.
Community Safety
The RTBG is seen as a safe place, increasing the potential community perception of safety, peace and calm. The Strategic Plan includes actions to reinforce the sense that the Gardens are a refuge from everyday stress and worries. The development of linkages with other gardens across the state will assist in the creation of a safer recreational refuge and contemplative opportunities for Tasmanians.
Education Retention
The RTBG will offer, on its own and in partnership, a range of interesting, relevant and accessible education and training programs encouraging ongoing participation in Vocational Educational Training and tertiary education and life-long learning opportunities.
Governance
The RTBG will actively seek partnership arrangements that assist us and the state to develop a sustainable approach to managing our heritage.
Promotion, Investment and Growth
The RTBG has a specific goal to increase visitor numbers and actions designed to attract increased numbers of interstate and international visitors and encourage them to stay longer.
Environment
While the Strategic Plan does not directly address the priority environmental benchmarks, the emphasis on protection, conservation and sustainability of our operations, including specific actions related to maintaining biodiversity and rare and endangered species recovery and reintroduction plans, should have a major impact on assisting other agencies to meet and exceed these benchmarks.
Promoting Healthy Lifestyles
The RTBG offers a range of opportunities to promote a healthy lifestyle through events, education, exhibitions and interpretation of relevant areas of the Gardens.
Employment
The RTBG offers new and both structured and unstructured opportunities for employment in the cultural industries. It also offers additional opportunities for vocational and tertiary employment in Tasmania. The establishment of accredited training programs for RTBG volunteers is another opportunity for people to obtain skills and the RTBG to attract new volunteers. The Green Reserves Program offers valuable work experience to older, out of work, Tasmanians.
